The festive season can make it challenging to maintain top physical condition. It's simple to consume too much, indulge in poor-quality food, and skip your exercise routine entirely. If you're after some entertaining Christmas workouts, click here before you finish reading this article. However, if you'd rather not do a festive workout, here are some lighthearted suggestions for keeping fit and well throughout the festive period:
Connect with Your Younger Relatives
Nothing torches kilojoules quite like chasing an energetic young child around. Honestly, the smaller they are, the more they resemble that unstoppable Energizer Bunny. They just keep moving, and moving, and moving, and moving. A fun round of Tag or What's the Time Mr Wolf will get your pulse racing.
No younger family members around? Encourage everyone to participate in touch football or another sport. Whatever the conditions (barring torrential rain), participating in sports with family is invariably entertaining. At minimum, you'll have the chance to release any pent-up frustration you feel towards your relatives.
Spontaneous Dance Parties
They're always a hit at any point during the year, though Christmas does give them a touch more social legitimacy. Crank up the festive carols and boogie away until your heart is satisfied!
Want to push it further? Rally together some mates or relatives and create your own festive routine. Show it off to everyone or film it and boldly post it online. Down the track, you'll reminisce, have a good chuckle, and treasure those special holiday occasions.
Festive Fitness Sessions
I realise I've already put together a comprehensive post on seasonal fitness routines, yet they remain an excellent, efficient method to shed those extra calories. Is your family competitive by nature? Convert the exercises into a friendly contest. During the HIIT sessions, find out who can complete the most repetitions within the given timeframe. With the 12 Days of Christmas Workout, discover who can finish the sequence most quickly, whilst maintaining excellent technique. Your physique will appreciate it down the track!
Pay Attention to Your Food Choices
Overindulging during festive season celebrations is remarkably common. Survey most Australian families' Christmas tables and you'll spot generous amounts of butter throughout. The quantity of butter incorporated into various recipes is truly staggering. It's remarkably simple to rapidly rack up substantial calorie consumption. But how can you relish your preferred holiday meals without putting away a year's calorie allowance?
Start with portion awareness. Unlike workout and sports challenges where eating the most becomes a contest, this isn't an event you should join. You're absolutely free to savour whatever appeals to you—simply stay conscious of how much you consume.
Secondly, there's always the option of selecting more nutritious choices. Rather than filling your plate with high-carb, high-starch items, focus on roasted vegetables as the main component. You can still enjoy the richer dishes, but reduce your portions. Gravy contains extraordinarily high calorie levels. Instead of covering your entire plate with it, pour a modest serving into a small dish and use it sparingly (or skip it entirely). You're less likely to experience a food coma and won't suffer a dramatic blood sugar drop the following day!
Remain Content and Upbeat
Over the festive season, mishaps are practically unavoidable. Disagreements happen, the roast might go up in flames, and you could find yourself celebrating solo. That's perfectly fine. Don't dwell on what goes wrong. Maintain a positive, balanced emotional state.
Should a problem arise, reflect on actions you might take to resolve it. If no solutions exist, accept it and move ahead. Is the issue particularly complex? Refer to the advice in How to Cope with Holiday Stress to help restore your festive mood!
Above all, make the most of this period. It might be your sole chance each year to have everyone you care about in one place. Cherish it. Have fun. Smile. Create some wonderful moments to remember.
Until we meet again...
Keep wondering!
